Cars, bikes and everything that keeps them running have had a surprisingly good record in the Den. Our index tracks nine automotive pitches across the show's history, and every single one of them walked out with a deal. That is a perfect strike rate in a category where the overall Den average sits at around 30 percent.

Ranked 14th by pitch volume among our category tags, automotive is not a huge slice of the show, but it punches well above its weight when it comes to closing. Here is what actually got funded, what it was worth, and which of these businesses are still trading.

A 100 Percent Strike Rate

Nine pitches, nine deals. No other explanation is really needed for why this category is worth a look. Cars and the businesses built around them tend to have something the Dragons like: a clear, provable market (everyone owns or uses a vehicle), a specific problem being solved, and numbers that are easy to check.

That is a stark contrast with the roughly 30 percent success rate across the whole show. Automotive founders who make it to the carpet seem to arrive with pitches the Dragons find hard to say no to, whether that is because motoring problems are universally understood or because the category simply weeds out weaker ideas before they ever reach the studio floor.

A small sample matters here too. Nine pitches is not a huge dataset, and a 100 percent close rate on nine tries carries more statistical noise than the same rate would on ninety. Still, the pattern holds across a fifteen-series span, from series 3 through series 15, which is a long enough stretch to say this is not simply a lucky run.

The Pitches That Landed

The lineup spans everything from small fixes to full businesses. Autosafe, a seat belt height adjuster, closed a deal in series 3, one of the earliest automotive pitches in the show's run. DDN Ltd pitched a misfuelling prevention device in series 6 and got backed, tackling a problem, putting the wrong fuel in a car, that costs UK drivers millions of pounds in repairs every year. Servicing Stop, a bespoke nationwide car servicing company, landed its deal in series 7, building a service business rather than a single product.

JPM Eco Logistics, an environmentally friendly haulage company, took £100,000 for 40 percent of the business in series 5, an early example of green thinking applied to a traditionally unglamorous industry. Power 8 Workshop pitched a cordless bench top power tool system in series 8, aimed at the DIY end of the automotive world rather than professional garages. AB Performance, a bike engined car manufacturing, servicing, repair and tuning company, secured £50,000 for 35 percent in series 9, a niche manufacturing business built around a genuinely unusual product line. Pro Tec Covers, which makes caravan and motor home fabric covers, closed in series 10, tapping into the UK's enduring caravan and camper culture. Chain Monkey, a motorcycle chain tensioning tool, took £75,000 for 25 percent in series 15, the most recent pitch in the category and proof the automotive category's strong close rate has held up over time rather than being a quirk of the show's earlier years.

The Biggest Deal in the Category

The category's headline deal belongs to Motor Mouse, which pitched wireless computer mice shaped like famous sports cars in series 7. The founders walked away with £120,000 for 40 percent of the business, the largest sum any automotive pitch has taken home in our index.

Across the nine deals, the average investment works out to roughly £86,000, which is a solid number for a category built on relatively low pitch volume but consistently strong outcomes. That average sits above what many far larger categories manage, reinforcing that automotive founders who get in front of the panel tend to leave with meaningful money behind them, not just a token cheque.

Who Backed the Category

Deals in this category have been spread across the panel rather than concentrated in one Dragon's hands. Deborah Meaden, whose taste for well-run, practical businesses lines up neatly with automotive's problem-solving pitches, tops the list, though even her tally here is a single deal. That spread suggests automotive pitches tend to appeal broadly rather than to one Dragon's particular niche, with joint deals between two Dragons showing up repeatedly across the category's history, including the Pro Waste-style pairings that automotive founders have benefited from when a pitch impressed more than one investor at once.

Where Things Stand Now

Our index currently tracks all nine automotive businesses as still selling. Servicing Stop, Motor Mouse, DDN Ltd, Autosafe and the rest have kept trading well beyond their Den appearances, some of them years and multiple series removed from their original pitch.

If there is a lesson in the automotive numbers, it is that a tight, well-evidenced pitch in a category everyone understands tends to do well in front of five investors who have all, at some point, had a car serviced or misfuelled their own engine. It is a category with a small back catalogue but an unusually clean track record, and every entry in it, from a £50,000 tuning business to a £120,000 novelty gadget company, is still open for business today.
