Enclothed pitched a men's clothing subscription and delivery service in series 12 and rattled Peter Jones with its return rate on air. It had a genuinely strong run afterwards, but the company as it pitched no longer exists, and the honest answer today is no, it is not still in business under its own name.

The company's path from a difficult on-air moment to real growth, and then to an acquisition and eventual closure, is one of the more layered stories in this index.

The Short Answer

Enclothed is not still trading. The business was sold to a rival men's styling service, The Chapar, in October 2018, and the Enclothed brand was formally dissolved in 2021. There is no current storefront operating under the Enclothed name.

The Pitch

Enclothed pitched in series 12, episode 9, offering a hassle-free styling and delivery service for men: customers built a profile, stylists picked a box of clothes, and customers only paid for what they kept and sent the rest back. The founders asked for seventy thousand pounds for 15 percent of the company, and one detail of the pitch, the company's return rate, visibly caught Peter Jones off guard on camera.

Despite the tense moment around the numbers, the pitch worked, and the founders left with a deal in principle.

The Deal Fell Through, But the Business Grew Anyway

As with several other companies in this index, the on-air deal did not survive the post-show due diligence process. Enclothed did not need it to keep growing, though. The company went on to raise a substantial equity crowdfunding round, more than doubling its initial four hundred thousand pound target on Crowdcube, a clear vote of confidence from ordinary investors after the show aired.

For several years after its Den appearance, Enclothed had real momentum: a growing subscriber base, national press coverage, and a functioning delivery and returns operation in a genuinely difficult retail category.

The Acquisition and Eventual Close

In October 2018, Enclothed was acquired by The Chapar, a rival personal styling service for men, in what was reported as a straightforward competitor buyout rather than a distress sale. Being bought by a direct competitor is often a reasonably good outcome for a founder, better than shutting down outright, even if it means the original brand eventually disappears.

That is what happened here. The Enclothed name was wound down after the acquisition, and company records show it was formally dissolved in 2021, roughly three years after the sale completed.

Consolidation of this kind is common in narrow, crowded subscription categories. Rather than two competing men's styling services both burning cash to acquire the same pool of customers, a buyout lets the stronger of the two absorb the weaker one's customer base directly, which is often the more capital-efficient outcome for the category as a whole, even though it means one of the original brand names disappears from the market.

Why the Return Rate Question Mattered

It is worth returning to the moment that made Enclothed's pitch memorable in the first place. Subscription styling services live or die on their return rate, how much of what gets sent out actually gets kept and paid for, because every returned item is a delivery cost, a repacking cost and a lost sale all at once. Peter Jones's visible surprise at the figure on the day was not just good television, it went straight to the single number that determines whether a business like this can ever turn a profit at scale.

In hindsight, that same underlying economics, high delivery and returns overhead relative to revenue per box, is a familiar thread running through several subscription and box-based businesses that eventually get acquired or wound down rather than growing indefinitely on their own.

Where Things Stand Now

So Enclothed's arc is a genuinely instructive one: a rattled pitch, a deal that fell through anyway, a strong crowdfunding round, real growth for a few years, then an acquisition by a competitor and eventual dissolution.

If you are looking to sign up for Enclothed's styling box today, you cannot. The company was sold and later closed. Any current styling subscription for men will be a different business entirely, not a continuation of this one.

It is worth remembering, though, that being acquired rather than simply shutting down is often read as the better of the two outcomes for founders and early investors alike. Enclothed did not vanish because it failed outright, it was folded into a larger competitor after several years of genuine growth, which is a meaningfully different story from a company that never found its footing at all.
