The largest deal in this category went to Electro Expo, which secured £150,000 for 32 percent of the business in series 5. That equity stake values the business at roughly £469,000, one of the more ambitious valuations to come out of the category's early years.

Who Backs Electronics Pitches

Among the names still trading are Standby Saver, Electro Expo, Saboteur Crime Prevention, Westhawk and Tech 21, a spread that runs from energy-saving devices to phone accessories and home security systems.

The Challenge of Pitching Unfamiliar Technology

Explaining a piece of hardware or an electronic system in the space of a few minutes is a genuinely harder task than most other categories face. Where a food founder can hand round a sample and a fashion founder can hold up a garment, an electronics founder often has to talk the Dragons through how something works before they can even get to why it is worth buying.

That extra step of technical explanation appears to be a real hurdle, and it likely accounts for why electronics sits in the middle of the pack on deal rate rather than near the top, despite still comfortably beating the show's overall average. Founders who simplify the pitch to one clear benefit, rather than getting lost in specifications, tend to do better in the room.

A gadget pitched a year or two ahead of the market can struggle to convince Dragons of the demand, while the same product pitched once the wider market has caught up looks like an obvious yes.
